PhD research starts at University of Stuttgart

Simon Schleicher joins the biomimetic research team at the ITKE – Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart and will work there towards his PhD. His transdisciplinary research will be advised by the structural engineer Prof. Jan Knippers (ITKE), the biologist Prof. Thomas Speck of the Plant Biomechanics Group (PBG) at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, and the architect Prof. Achim Menges of the recently founded Institute for Computational Design (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart. With his PhD, Simon Schleicher will contribute to ITKE’s current research endeavors on “deployable structures in architecture – flexible surface structures on the basis of bionic principles.” Thereby, his PhD will focus on the architectural implementation of “Biomimetic Foils and Membranes” which are inspired by the folding and buckling mechanism of plant leaves.
