Paper presentation @FABRICATE 2011

Research Pavilion wins DETAIL award 2011

Last night the project team of the Research Pavilion won the DETAIL award 2011 in the category “students/university”. Congratulations to all!!

Für den Sonderpreis Studenten überzeugte die Projektgruppe »Forschungspavillon« der Institute ICD und ITKE der Universität Stuttgart mit dem Projekt Forschungspavillon: Der elegante Pavillon mit seinem leichten und gleichzeitig raumbegrenzenden Tragwerk aus gebogenem Sperrholz zeigt neuartige Anwendungs- und Verarbeitungsmöglichkeiten für das Material Holz auf. Dabei werden computergestützte Entwurfsmöglichkeiten ausgetestet und das Potenzial des parametrischen Bauens durch die Studenten erforscht.

FEM simulation of bending-active structures

Based on the PhD research of my colleague at the ITKE Julian Lienhard (www.julian-lienhard.com), our team planned the pavilion by using a new approach to simulate the large elastic deformation of multiple plywood strips and to calculate the resulting force equilibrium of the thereby form found geometry. In order to simulate the structure’s global equilibrium, which is the sum of locally stored energy from all bent components, the model needed to begin firstly with the planar distribution of all 80 strips.  This was followed by simulating their elastic bending and subsequent coupling within the FEM software Sofistik to form a combined self-stabilizing structure.  Therefore, this structural analysis model allowed for both – on the one hand verifying the initially predicted geometrical shape within predefined stress levels and material capacity utilization, on the other hand understanding the deformation behavior of the pavilion when additional loads (e.g. wind loads) were applied. Research Pavilion ICD/ITKE: On-site assembly

On 5th of July the on-site assembly of the 80 elastically bent plywood lamellas of the Research Pavilion ICD/ITKE has started! The opening date is scheduled for the faculty’s annual summer party on the 23rd of July 2010 at 6.30 pm / Keplerstraße 11/ University of Stuttgart. Research Pavilion ICD/ITKE – SUMMER 2010

The Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart are realising a temporary research pavilion built with timber. The innovative structure demonstrates the latest developments in computational design-, simulation-, and manufacturing processes in architecture, which are synthesised in a complex construction system made of elastically bent plywood strips. The project will be situated on the University’s campus in the city centre and is going to be opened to the public during the faculty’s annual summer party on the 23rd of July 2010.

Simon Schleicher is going to contribute to the research pavilion by being the project manager.

Teaser: Fabrication of the Research Pavilion ICD/ITKE has started

Yesterday we started the fabrication of the ICD/ITKE research pavilion. Stay tuned to follow the manufacturing process and see the construction site. Furthermore, the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) will post more information about the project shortly.
